We organise regular visits to companies in the Scottish Belt, with a view to help postgraduate students connect with Scotland’s vibrant optics and photonics industry. Tours typically include an overview of the company’s activities, a visit to the production facilities and provide the opportunity for informal discussion with engineers and managers.
Visiting KAIAM Europe, Livingston, 1 June 2017
On the 1st of June 2017, SCOPE was delighted to organise a special visit to one of the largest photonics cleanroom in Europe, KAIAM’s advanced manufacturing site in Livingston (www.kaiam.com). Our restricted group of 8 members had the chance to observe firsthand the production of cutting-edge industrial photonic integrated circuits technology while touring KAIAM’s 30 000 ft2 clean rooms, the largest such facility in Scotland. Around coffee and cakes, team leaders and engineers told us more about their work within a fast growing company currently providing 450+ jobs in Scotland.
Visiting OPTOS plc, Dunfermline, 28 March 2017
For 12 of our SCOPE members, spring started off with a trip across the Central Belt for our visit of Optos (www.optos.com), an innovative, Dunfermline-based SME now a world leader in wide-field retinal imaging. Jano Van Hermert (Research Director) and Sarah Jardine (Director of Manufacturing) led us through an extensive and engaging presentation of Optos, including a full tour of the factory where the company’s flagship “Optomap” is produced. Optos is recruiting across a wide range of profiles and this visit was a convincing demonstration of engineering, physics and photonics being put together to innovation in biomedical imaging.
Visiting M Squared Lasers, Glasgow, 26 January 2016
On the afternoon of January 16, 2016, SCOPE organised a student tour of Msquared, one of the fastest-growing technology SMEs in the UK with historic ties to the University of Strathclyde : www.m2lasers.com. Our 17-member group received a warm welcome at the West of Scotland Science Park, where company engineers and researchers offered live demonstrations of their state-of-the-art lasers and photonics platforms. We enjoyed ending the afternoon chatting with M Squared employees around pizzas and drinks !
Visiting Helia Photonics, Livingston, 26 May 2015
10 enthusiastic SCOPE members made the trip to Livingston to visit Helia Photonics, a small but internationally renowned company specialised in high quality optical coatings for micro-optics and semiconductor devices (www.helia-photonics.com). We toured Helia’s 8000ft2 purpose-built cleanroom and engaged with the company’s founders and employees, some of them Strathclyde alumni. A perfect example of a university spinout having found its market, and a great chance for our members to discover all of it from the inside !
